Every design system was built for a different internet.
Back in 2020, as digital products rapidly grew, every major design system—from Material Design to Chakra UI—was designed around one assumption:
people interact with interfaces through touch, clicks, keyboards, and gestures.
Buttons, dropdowns, forms, sliders, tabs, and navigation patterns became the building blocks of modern software. Every component focused on helping humans perform an action.
The interaction model is changing.
Today, AI is changing how people use software.
Instead of navigating screens and clicking through multiple steps, users increasingly communicate their intent directly:
"Transfer ₹5,000 to John."
"Book my flight for tomorrow."
"Summarize this document."
The interface is no longer guiding every action. AI understands the request, performs the task, and returns only the information or confirmation the user needs.
When conversations replace clicks, components evolve too.
A button was once the primary way to interact with software.
Design systems perfected button states like Default, Hover, Pressed, Loading, Disabled, and Success because every interaction depended on them.
But conversational interfaces introduce entirely different moments.
The system may be listening, thinking, retrieving information, asking for clarification, executing a task, or waiting for confirmation. These interactions require a completely different visual feedback & behaviour rules.
It's not that buttons disappear—they simply become one of many interaction methods rather than the center of every experience.
Traditional components weren't designed for AI agents.
When an AI agent performs the work… there is no cursor hovering.
No finger pressing.
No repeated clicking.
Instead, users need entirely different feedback.
Is the AI listening? Is it reasoning? Is it searching? Is it waiting for confirmation? Is it taking action?
The states change. The behavior changes. The visual language changes.
